Stephen V. Hammond is the President of Chenault Hammond, P.C. and a respected trial attorney with more than 38 years of experience in private practice in Decatur, Alabama. He handles a wide range of civil and domestic relations matters. His practice includes family law, medical malpractice, construction disputes, automobile and trucking accidents, wrongful death claims, and personal injury cases. He also represents clients in divorce, custody, child support, and contempt proceedings.
Mr. Hammond earned his J.D. from the University of Alabama. During law school, he served as a Student Work Editor for the Alabama Law Review and was a member of the Bench and Bar. He also earned a B.A. from the University of Alabama and attended the University of Montevallo. His strong academic foundation prepared him for a career focused on complex litigation and appellate advocacy.
Mr. Hammond has handled significant cases that shaped Alabama law throughout his career. He was counsel in Ex parte Brewington, a landmark decision recognizing a parent’s continuing duty to support a disabled child beyond the age of majority. He also represented a party in St. Paul Insurance Co. v. Cromeans, a case addressing insurance coverage for medical-misconduct claims. He has achieved notable results in both defense and plaintiff matters, including medical malpractice and serious injury cases.
