Shay Dvoretzky

Shay Dvoretzky leads Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates’ Supreme Court and Appellate Practice, representing clients in high-stakes appellate litigation across the U.S. Supreme Court, federal appellate courts, and state appellate courts. With over 20 arguments before the Supreme Court—including nine since 2020—he is regarded as one of the nation’s most active and accomplished appellate advocates. His recent victories span constitutional, administrative, and commercial law, setting precedent in cases involving federal preemption, arbitration enforcement, civil rights, and statutory interpretation.

Mr. Dvoretzky earned his J.D. from Yale Law School in 2000, where he was a Coker Fellow and Olin Fellow and received the William Wang Prize in Corporate Law. He holds a B.A. from Yale University, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, awarded in 1995.

Mr. Dvoretzky is a leading appellate advocate for Fortune 500 companies, sovereign governments, and major public institutions. His track record includes winning high‑stakes regulatory appeals for major airlines, enforcing arbitration awards under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA), and defending corporate interests in complex antitrust, ERISA, and tax disputes. He frequently partners with trial teams from the outset to design appellate-ready litigation strategies. Before joining Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates, Shay Dvoretzky clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and Judge J. Michael Luttig of the Fourth Circuit. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and a member of the American Law Institute. He maintains a strong pro bono practice and was recognized with the 2025 Burton Award for Distinguished Legal Writing.
