Ryan Black is a Partner at Hepworth Holzer, LLP, where he represents clients in criminal defense and civil litigation matters. Ryan earned his Juris Doctor after gaining early legal experience working for the Nez Perce Tribe, where he developed a passion for challenging government overreach and advocating for individuals facing powerful institutions. After law school, he clerked for a District Judge in Payette, Idaho, gaining valuable insight into judicial decision-making and courtroom procedure. He later served as a trial attorney with the Ada County Public Defender’s Office, where his relentless approach to advocacy earned him the memorable nickname “trial cockroach.”

During his time at the Public Defender’s Office, Ryan tried dozens of cases before juries, securing successful outcomes in many of them and further strengthening his dedication to criminal defense and trial work. He later expanded his practice to include civil litigation, applying the same analytical skill, strategic thinking, and courtroom experience to complex civil disputes.
