About
Robert L. Shaver began practicing law in Boise in 1995, building a respected career focused on intellectual property law. His work included patent and trademark prosecution, litigation involving trade secrets and copyrights, and advising inventors and businesses on protecting innovations. In 2018, he transitioned to senior status while continuing to support clients as a registered patent agent.
Robert earned his B.A. in Biology with a Chemistry minor from Cal State Stanislaus in 1972. He later completed his MBA at City University in Seattle in 1984 and went on to receive his J.D. from the University of Idaho in 1995. This academic foundation supported his ability to combine technical knowledge with legal skill in highly complex patent matters.
Robert became a registered patent attorney in 1998 and gained admission to practice in Idaho, Washington, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Federal District of Idaho, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He wrote on intellectual property topics for the Idaho State Bar journal and lectured on subjects including internet law, trade dress protection, and the history of technology in patent development.
Robert also drew from over two decades of technical industry experience prior to law. He worked twelve years at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington, where he developed expert computer systems for hazardous waste management, inspected labs across the U.S., and built software simulations for long-term site planning. His earlier roles in food processing, analytical chemistry, and metallurgy broadened his technical expertise, later informing his patent practice.
Robert L. Shaver concluded his active law practice after more than two decades, but he remains engaged with intellectual property through consulting and writing. His career reflects a rare blend of legal acumen and scientific insight, and his continued involvement as a patent agent ensures that inventors and businesses still benefit from his extensive knowledge and dedication.
