Robert B. Spence brings more than 40 years of legal experience to his role as Of Counsel. He has served as a prosecutor, appellate judge, and Chief Judge in Illinois, handling thousands of civil and criminal cases. His background includes extensive work in complex divorce matters, criminal prosecutions, and appellate decisions. With deep knowledge of courtroom procedure and the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act, he provides valuable insight in challenging family law cases.
Spence earned his J.D. from John Marshall Law School. He received his B.S. from Taylor University. His legal education prepared him for a career dedicated to public service and courtroom advocacy. Early in his career, he worked for the State’s Attorney’s offices in Kane and DuPage counties and for the Illinois Attorney General, prosecuting serious criminal cases and supervising other prosecutors.
In 2001, Spence was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to serve as a judge in the Circuit Court of Kane County. During his tenure, he presided over more than 5,000 hearings and trials in divorce cases. He later served as Chief Judge, overseeing court operations and improving efficiency within the judicial system. In 2012, he was appointed as an appellate judge in the Second District, authoring over 500 appellate opinions before retiring in 2019.
Through decades of judicial and prosecutorial service, Robert B. Spence developed strong leadership skills and a thorough understanding of evidentiary rules and trial strategy. His experience presiding over complex family law matters allows him to guide clients through difficult disputes with clarity and perspective. He now applies his extensive courtroom knowledge to help clients pursue practical, well-informed solutions in divorce and related legal matters.
