Richard J. Helsper is a Brookings native and experienced attorney with a strong focus on business and estate matters. He has built a long-standing career advising clients on transactions, corporate law, and real estate. He is known for providing practical guidance and steady legal support.
Richard earned his Bachelor’s degree from South Dakota State University in 1974. He then received his Juris Doctorate from Southern Methodist University School of Law in Dallas, Texas, in 1977, preparing him for a career in both business and legal practice.
After joining the State Bar of South Dakota, Richard began his legal career with the law firm of McCann, Martin, and Mickelson in Brookings. He gained valuable early experience working on a variety of legal matters and developed a strong foundation in client service.
In April of 1984, Richard co-founded his own law firm with George Mickelson. Their partnership continued until January of 1987, when Mr. Mickelson was elected Governor of South Dakota. This period marked an important step in his professional growth and leadership.
Richard’s practice focuses on business transactions, public and private corporate law, estate planning, probate, and real estate matters. He works closely with clients to help them plan, manage, and protect their personal and business interests through clear, practical solutions.
Richard J. Helsper is admitted to practice before all South Dakota state and federal courts. He is also admitted to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court, reflecting his broad legal experience and qualifications.
