Peter L. Murray

Peter L. Murray has built a distinguished legal career over more than fifty years, handling complex civil matters and guiding clients through demanding disputes. He has worked on major cases involving patent issues, industrial defects, public utilities, and constitutional questions, always focusing on practical solutions and strong advocacy for those he serves.

Peter completed his education at Harvard College before earning his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. He later clerked for Hon. Edward T. Gignoux of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine, gaining early experience that shaped his understanding of trial work and judicial process. His admissions in multiple courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, strengthened his ability to handle significant legal issues.

Peter continued to expand his career by contributing to the development of the Maine Rules of Evidence as a consultant to the Maine Advisory Committee on Rules of Evidence beginning in 1973. He co-authored Field & Murray, Maine Evidence, and has revised the treatise several times, offering guidance to lawyers and judges. His work also includes major civil litigation, such as shipbuilding disputes, reorganizations, and public utilities investigations.

Peter spent many years in academia, teaching at Harvard Law School in both part-time and full-time roles. He taught subjects such as Evidence, Legal Ethics, Federal Litigation, and Trial Advocacy while also directing the Winter Trial Advocacy Workshop. His teaching extended internationally, including service as a Senior Fulbright Professor at the University of Freiburg, where he deepened his engagement with comparative law.
