Patrick Mahaney

Patrick Mahaney is a seasoned attorney based in Montgomery, Alabama, focusing on DUI defense, drug-related offenses, serious traffic violations, and driver license issues. With more than two decades of law enforcement experience, he uses his background in criminal investigations and public safety to effectively defend clients facing complex legal challenges in state and federal courts.

Patrick began his education at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, where he earned a B.A. in Political Science in 1973. He later pursued legal studies at Jones School of Law in Montgomery, Alabama, completing his J.D. in 1988. His strong academic foundation supports his career in both public service and private legal practice.

Patrick’s career includes twenty-two years with the Alabama Department of Public Safety, where he served as a trooper, academy specialist, staff officer, and assistant legal counsel. After retiring as a lieutenant, he transitioned into law, first serving as a municipal prosecutor and city attorney. He later expanded his experience by supporting U.S. State Department police operations in Kosovo, Jordan, and Iraq.

Patrick has also been recognized for his professional contributions. In June 2010, he received the President’s Award from the Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, honoring his dedication to the practice of criminal defense. His memberships include the Montgomery County Bar Association, the National College for DUI Defense—where he serves as Alabama’s state delegate—and the DUI Defense Lawyers Association as a charter member.

Beyond practice, Patrick contributes to legal scholarship and training. He is the author of Alabama DUI Defense: The Law and the Practice, 5th Edition, and has written for publications including the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin and Alabama Peace Officer’s Journal. He regularly lectures at continuing legal education programs and law enforcement seminars.
