About

Patrick Flanagan is a partner at Cranfill Sumner LLP and a seasoned trial lawyer with nearly 30 years of experience. He chairs the firm’s Municipalities & Public Entities Practice Group and serves as Vice-Chair of the Employment Practice Group. His practice focuses on defending cities, counties, government agencies, and employers in complex civil lawsuits involving civil rights, employment claims, wrongful death, defamation, and negligence. Patrick is known for his deep understanding of public entity and employment law and his ability to develop legal strategies tailored to each case.

Patrick earned his Juris Doctor from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1990. He holds a Bachelor of Science from St. Lawrence University, which he earned in 1987.

Before joining Cranfill Sumner LLP, Patrick served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps and worked as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney. He is admitted to practice in all U.S. District Courts in North Carolina, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is also a Certified Mediator through the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission.

Patrick has successfully defended clients in both jury trials and appellate courts. His work extends to administrative agencies such as the EEOC, U.S. DOJ, and state employment boards. He frequently advises city councils, boards, and HR departments, helping them manage risk and navigate legal challenges.
