Michael W. Zimmerman focuses his legal practice on commercial litigation, bankruptcy, and restructuring matters. He advises both corporate and individual clients in business disputes, condemnation proceedings, and complex collection cases in state and federal courts. He also handles receiverships, banking, and financial services matters.
Zimmerman holds a J.D. from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law (2009), where he earned the Highest Pro Bono Distinction. He also holds a Master’s in Teaching from Johns Hopkins University (2002) and a B.A. in English from the University of Wisconsin. His academic background reflects a strong foundation in legal analysis, writing, and client service.
Before joining Berry Riddell, Zimmerman practiced at Zwillinger Greek & Knecht PC and Polsinelli PC in the Bankruptcy and Financial Restructuring group. He began his legal career clerking at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Arizona as its first Pro Se Law Clerk, aiding all chambers in pro se matters.
Zimmerman’s bankruptcy experience includes representing secured and unsecured creditors, landlords, and debtors in Chapter 7 and 11 cases. Zimmerman frequently handles adversary proceedings and commercial workouts. His clients benefit from his thorough understanding of insolvency and debtor-creditor relations.
Zimmerman is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Arizona, the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. His recognitions include listings in The Best Lawyers in America for Bankruptcy Law (2020–2024) and Super Lawyers (2024), with earlier recognition as a Rising Star (2016–2019).
