Matthew Ranelli is a partner at Shipman & Goodwin LLP in New Haven and Hartford, Connecticut. He chairs the firm’s Renewable Energy Practice and represents clients in environmental, renewable energy, and land use matters. His clients include developers, schools, municipalities, quasi-governmental agencies, and other stakeholders seeking guidance on clean energy projects, green building standards, energy conservation, power purchase agreements, and environmental permitting.

Ranelli earned his J.D. from Vermont Law School in 1994 and later received an M.S.L. summa cum laude from Vermont Law School in 1997. He also received his B.A. from DePauw University in 1988. His education supports his work in environmental law, land use planning, energy regulation, site remediation, and the legal analysis needed to guide clients through complex project and compliance issues.

Ranelli’s experience includes renewable energy projects, energy savings performance contracts, environmental transactions, litigation, site remediation, enforcement defense, and land use representation. He handles matters involving wetlands, zoning, Connecticut Transfer Act compliance, Brownfield redevelopment, PFAS, state and federal Superfund actions, eminent domain, adverse possession, and takings claims. Through this work, he helps clients manage environmental risk, obtain approvals, resolve disputes, and complete projects with practical legal guidance.
