About

Matthew G. Barnd is a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, attorney who chairs a real estate practice group and represents developers, investors, financial institutions, and business owners. His practice spans commercial real estate, financial services, business transactions, and environmental law. He advises clients across industrial, retail, hospitality, office, agricultural, and multifamily asset classes, helping them structure transactions, address property issues, and pursue development opportunities.

Barnd earned his Juris Doctor with distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2017 after receiving a bachelor’s degree from Coe College in 2013. His academic training supports a practice that requires careful legal analysis, commercial awareness, and practical problem-solving. That foundation helps him evaluate complex deal terms, financing structures, regulatory considerations, and the risks associated with real estate ownership and development.

Barnd’s transactional experience includes real estate sales and acquisitions, secured transactions, leasing, property management, zoning and land use, development, mechanic’s liens, loan restructuring, and bankruptcy-related matters. Barnd also handles conventional and specialized financing, including Small Business Administration and public bond financing. He advises on public-private development incentives such as tax increment financing, workforce housing programs, and enterprise zones, giving clients coordinated guidance throughout the life cycle of commercial real estate projects.

Matthew G. Barnd is admitted to Iowa state courts and the federal district and bankruptcy courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa. He serves on the Client Security Commission within the Iowa Supreme Court Office of Professional Regulation and belongs to the Iowa State Bar Association and Linn County Bar Association. His community leadership has included board service with Matthew 25, the YMCA of the Cedar Rapids Metro Area, and the Archdiocese Catholic School Board in Dubuque.
