Matthew D. Murphy

Matthew D. Murphy is a partner at Boyce Law Firm LLP in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with a broad civil litigation and trial practice. He represents hospitals and medical professionals in defense matters, plaintiffs pursuing personal injury or wrongful death claims, and businesses facing commercial disputes. His work also includes defending municipalities and companies when litigation arises and helping clients assess practical ways to resolve claims.

Matthew attended the University of South Dakota for undergraduate studies and law school, graduating from law school with Sterling Honors, a distinction for the top portion of his class. He participated in the law school trial team and was named a second-team Academic All-American while playing university football. After law school, he clerked for the Second Judicial Circuit in Sioux Falls before joining Boyce in 2011.

His trial experience includes defending health care providers in medical malpractice and wrongful death cases, as well as representing clients in premises liability and business disputes. He obtained defense verdicts for a hospital and staff in a professional negligence case and for a hospital in a wrongful death action in 2021. Matthew works on matters involving contracts, construction disputes, professional liability, and insurance-related litigation.

Matthew became a partner in 2018 and practices in South Dakota state and federal courts and before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has served as chair of the State Bar of South Dakota Evidence Committee and received the South Dakota Defense Lawyers Association Rising Star Award in 2017. Matthew D.
