Matthew F. Boyer

Matthew F. Boyer is a Wilmington, Delaware partner and co-chair of his firm’s labor and employment group. He advises employers on discrimination claims, compliance, employment agreements, restrictive covenants, internal investigations, and workplace mediation. He also represents attorneys, physicians, nurses, and other professionals in disciplinary proceedings. His practice extends to appellate, commercial, and government litigation involving complex or expedited disputes.

Boyer earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1986. He received his B.A. cum laude in English and American Literature and Language from Harvard College in 1980. He clerked for Delaware Supreme Court Chief Justice Andrew D. Christie from 1986 through 1987. His education and clerkship strengthened his legal analysis, writing, and understanding of Delaware procedure.

Boyer has represented the State of Delaware in significant constitutional and government litigation. He helped defend Delaware before the US Supreme Court in a sovereignty dispute involving the Delaware River. He also represented the state in expedited cases upholding its vote-by-mail statute. His employment work includes counseling, litigation, investigations, mediation, and enforcement of contractual restrictions. He has also served as a Delaware Superior Court special master in dozens of cases.

Matthew F. Boyer has appeared in The Best Lawyers in America for employment law since 2011. He was named its 2026 Wilmington Lawyer of the Year for Employment Law–Individuals. He received the Delaware State Bar Association’s Daniel L. Herrmann Professional Conduct Award in 2019. His professional service includes ethics committee leadership and prior work with bar examiners and disciplinary authorities. His practice reflects careful judgment, broad litigation experience, and sustained commitment to professional responsibility.
