Matt A. Poulsen is an accomplished patent attorney who represents inventors, startups, universities, and Fortune 500 companies in protecting and managing intellectual property. His practice spans U.S. and international patent preparation and prosecution, patentability opinions, freedom-to-operate reviews, and matters involving trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. He also advises entrepreneurs on early-stage IP strategies.

Matt earned a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy in physics from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He then completed his Juris Doctor at the University of Nebraska College of Law, graduating with distinction. His unique combination of technical knowledge and legal training enables him to address sophisticated innovations across many scientific and engineering fields.

Matt draws on his physics background in solid-state and condensed matter research to assist clients in areas such as telecommunications, semiconductors, nanotechnology, renewable energy, biofuels, chemical processing, agriculture, e-commerce, and the mechanical arts. His research on molecular engineering has been featured in peer-reviewed publications, giving him valuable insight into research-driven industries and the practical challenges of innovation.

Matt is admitted to the Nebraska Supreme Court and the U.S. District Court, District of Nebraska, and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In addition to legal practice, he serves as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Nebraska College of Law, where he teaches Patent Practice and Innovation Management. He also mentors participants in startup accelerators, guiding them in building strong intellectual property foundations.

Matt A. Poulsen remains dedicated to helping innovators secure and strengthen their intellectual property rights, offering guidance that empowers clients to protect discoveries and achieve success in competitive markets. He has earned recognition as a Super Lawyers’ Great Plains Rising Stars honoree from 2016 through 2020 and was a 2015 nominee for the Silicon Prairie Service Provider of the Year.
