Loyd Smith

Loyd Smith is senior counsel at Coal Creek Law in Cheyenne, Wyoming. His litigation and trial practice concentrates on personal injury defense, trucking litigation, commercial litigation, product liability litigation, construction defect, insurance coverage and bad faith, employment litigation, and civil rights law. He also works on business, corporate, and real estate matters. Admitted in Wyoming and Colorado, he represents litigants in state and federal trial courts and on appeal when disputes require experienced courtroom and appellate counsel.

Loyd received a J.D. with Honor from the University of Wyoming in 1987 and a B.A. from the University of Wyoming. After law school, he served as a general assignment law clerk for the Wyoming Supreme Court and then clerked for Justice Richard J. Macy. His legal education and judicial clerkships gave him direct experience with research, briefing, and the way courts evaluate contested issues before he entered private practice.

Loyd practiced with a Cheyenne firm from 1989 to 1996 and with Murane & Bostwick, LLC from 1996 to 2019 before joining Coal Creek Law. His work includes trials in state and federal courts and appeals to the Wyoming Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. His reported decisions cover a range of civil litigation issues. He has also lectured to defense lawyers, insurance adjusters, businesses, and employers on insurance practices and workers’ compensation.

Loyd has been recognized by Mountain States Super Lawyers since 2015 and by Best Lawyers since 2013 in litigation and defense practice categories identified by his firm. He belongs to the Defense Research Institute, Trucking Industry Defense Association, Defense Lawyers Association of Wyoming, and Wyoming State Bar.
