Leonard B. Levine is a nationally recognized criminal defense attorney known for his outstanding trial success and decades of courtroom experience. He has earned a reputation for representing clients in high-stakes felony and misdemeanor trials, including cases involving child abuse, sexual assault, and white collar crimes. His acquittal rate exceeds 90%.
Leonard earned his Juris Doctor from the University of California at Los Angeles, School of Law in 1971. While attending law school, he participated in the Moot Court – Criminal Program, further honing his litigation skills. His education laid a strong foundation for a distinguished career in both public service and private defense.
Leonard launched his legal career in the District Attorney’s Office, where he tried 25 felony cases—winning convictions in 21 of them—and handled more than 50 juvenile adjudications. His caseload included high-stakes matters like first-degree murder trials and the high-profile Lou Adler kidnapping case. These results earned him the respect of fellow attorneys and established his reputation as a highly effective prosecutor.
Leonard transitioned to private practice, where he handled over 80 felony jury trials and hundreds of misdemeanor cases. He became especially known for defending schoolteachers and coaches, referred to by the California Teachers Association, in criminal matters. Of the 132 such cases handled, 129 resulted in not guilty verdicts or dismissals—a rare and exceptional record.
Leonard is affiliated with prestigious legal organizations, including the California State Bar, Federal Bar Association, Inns of Court, and California Attorneys for Criminal Justice, where he served on the Board of Governors. He is also a recipient of the Jerry Giesler Award as Trial Lawyer of the Year, awarded in both 2000 and 2013 by the Criminal Courts Bar Association.
