Joseph P. Carrier

Joseph P. Carrier is the Managing Partner of Carrier, Shende & Associates, PC, and an intellectual property attorney with more than four decades of experience in patent and IP law. His career spans patent examination, prosecution, litigation, and strategic portfolio development for domestic and international clients across diverse industries.

Joseph earned his Juris Doctor with honors from Wayne State University Law School in 1991 and previously received a Bachelor of Science with honors in Chemical Engineering from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1983. His technical background supports his work in complex patent matters involving chemical and automotive technologies.

Joseph began his intellectual property career in 1983 as a Patent Examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office in Arlington, Virginia. After two years, he returned to Detroit and worked as a Registered Patent Agent while attending the evening law program at Wayne State University Law School, balancing full-time practice with family responsibilities.

Joseph has extensive experience handling U.S. and international patent applications, including preparation, prosecution, appeals, and patent strategy development. His practice also includes patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret litigation before state and federal courts.

Joseph has been retained by numerous U.S. and international companies to advise on patent procurement and intellectual property portfolio strategies. His experience includes representation before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and federal district courts in Michigan.

Joseph P. Carrier is registered as both a patent agent and attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and is licensed to practice law in Michigan. He is an active member of the State Bar of Michigan Intellectual Property Law Section, a registered non-resident patent agent with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, and previously served as an adjunct professor of intellectual property law.
