John M. Flannery is a Partner at Wilson Elser and a member of its Executive Committee, representing a commanding presence in New York’s legal landscape. Renowned across the Hudson Valley and statewide, he specializes in toxic torts, civil rights, municipal liability, employment law, and commercial litigation. His practice blends legal strategy with formidable courtroom execution.
John earned his Juris Doctor from Pennsylvania State University, The Dickinson School of Law in 1991, and a Bachelor of Arts from Colgate University in 1988. He is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey before several U.S. District Courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
In the wake of the World Trade Center disaster, John played a pivotal role as Defendants’ Co-liaison Counsel, managing over 1,500 toxic exposure claims. His defense of the Battery Park City Authority resulted in a complete litigation victory. He also routinely advises clients on commercial disputes and employment claims, including discrimination, wrongful termination, and workplace investigations.
John is known for his ability to grasp businesses’ operational needs while navigating complex regulatory and legal environments. His work with public entities includes civil rights violations, police conduct cases, zoning, RICO, and product liability disputes. His litigation efforts often yield successful outcomes in both trial and appellate courts.
Beyond his professional work, John M. Flannery has long advocated for access to justice. He served twelve years with New York State’s IOLA Fund, which supports legal services for low-income residents. He also sat on the Legal Services boards of the Hudson Valley and the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, advancing legal and healthcare access in the region.
