John D. Russell is a leading intellectual property attorney who focuses on patent prosecution, portfolio strategy, and trademark law. Russell earned his J.D. magna cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School, where he served as Executive Note Editor of the Michigan Telecommunications and Technology Law Review. He also holds a B.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University and an M.S. in Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.
With experience drafting and prosecuting hundreds of patents, Russell has worked across diverse technical areas including vehicle systems, emission controls, digital and analog signal processing, and adaptive software. He previously held an in-house IP role, giving him practical insight into patent licensing, enforcement, and global portfolio management.
Russell’s technical career includes award-winning research at Ford Motor Company, where he was honored with the Henry Ford Technology Award. He is the named inventor on more than 100 U.S. patents and has published numerous technical papers on clean technology, renewable energy, hydraulics, and control systems.
