Jason Amsel

Jason Amsel is an Austin intellectual property lawyer and founder and principal attorney at Amsel IP Law, who advises technology companies on patent strategy, portfolio development, and prosecution. He has drafted and prosecuted thousands of patent applications for startups and public companies. He also helps clients build new patent programs, revive inactive portfolios, and align intellectual property with business objectives. His experience includes strategic investments, acquisitions, SPAC transactions, IPOs, patent litigation, post-grant reviews, infringement analysis, and complex clearance matters.

Jason earned his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley – School of Law. He earned his M.Eng. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell University. He also earned his B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell University. His engineering background supports his work with advanced modern technical systems and inventions involving robotics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, medical devices, communications, electronics, semiconductors, software, imaging systems, autonomous vehicles, and other sophisticated technologies.

Jason spent 15 years at a large Silicon Valley law firm advising technology startups from formation through major acquisitions and public offerings. He regularly served as intellectual property counsel to startups and venture capital investors in transactions. He also developed experience with patent litigation and post-grant proceedings. Since relocating to Austin in 2015, he has remained active in the startup community while advising innovative companies on practical intellectual property strategies.

Jason Amsel is admitted to the State Bars of Texas and California, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the US Patent and Trademark Office. He has served as a mentor with Capital Factory and Austin Technology Incubator and as a guest lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin. His recognition includes Texas Rising Stars and Northern California Rising Stars selections for intellectual property legal work.
