James earned his B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1977, and his J.D. from the University of Tulsa College of Law in 1981, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Tulsa Law Review. James has held key leadership positions in the legal community, serving as President of the National Board of Trial Advocacy and chairing its Austin-Area Chapter.
