James K. Luster is a skilled criminal defense attorney and partner at Cofer Luster Criminal Defense Lawyers in Fort Worth, Texas. His legal career began as a prosecutor in Lubbock and Tarrant Counties, where he handled thousands of adult and juvenile cases. His background includes prosecution of a wide range of offenses, from misdemeanors like DWI to serious felonies such as murder and continuous sexual assault.
Luster earned his B.B.A. in Business Management, magna cum laude, from Abilene Christian University. He later obtained his J.D. from the University of Houston School of Law, where he was active in trial advocacy and student organizations, including the Christian Legal Society and the Student Bar Association.
Early in his legal career, Luster interned with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, gaining first-hand courtroom experience. After graduation, he became an Assistant Criminal District Attorney, starting in Lubbock County before joining the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office. In Tarrant County, he prosecuted thousands of cases and tried dozens of them to jury verdicts. He was later assigned to the Family Violence Unit, where he focused on domestic assault cases, learning how to handle complex and sensitive issues in trial settings.
In 2014, Luster entered private practice and founded his firm, quickly earning a reputation for effective defense representation. In 2018, he partnered with fellow former prosecutor Cody Cofer to form Cofer Luster Criminal Defense Lawyers. Together, they built a firm grounded in trial experience and shared values.
Luster has continued to defend clients charged with a wide range of offenses and has secured “not guilty” verdicts in his trials while assisting other attorneys. His legal strategy is shaped by years of courtroom work and his commitment to helping people at one of the most difficult times in their lives.
