About

James J. Schmidt is a shareholder in Meyer Capel’s litigation group, where he represents individuals, families, and businesses in resolving complex disputes. He provides strategic guidance to prevent conflict when possible and manage it effectively when it arises. He approaches every matter with clarity, professionalism, and careful attention to the pressures clients face during challenging legal circumstances.

James earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Grand Valley State University, with a concentration in legal studies and a minor in Spanish. He completed a master’s degree at The George Washington University before attending the University of Illinois College of Law. There, he graduated magna cum laude and gained a strong academic foundation for advanced litigation practice.

Prior to law school, James spent more than 7 years as a paralegal at a legal aid office. This experience exposed him to complex issues in state and federal courts and strengthened his understanding of client needs, case preparation, and procedural strategy. His background continues to influence his practical, client-centered approach to litigation.

Following law school, James completed a prestigious clerkship with the Honorable Rita B. Garman of the Illinois Supreme Court. This role refined his legal writing and analytical abilities while offering insight into appellate reasoning and judicial decision-making. He applies these skills to prepare compelling briefs and arguments for trial and appellate courts across the state.

James’s practice includes civil litigation, commercial disputes, construction-related issues, trust and estate conflicts, wage matters, and character-and-fitness representation. He has briefed cases before the Illinois and Michigan Supreme Courts and argued across multiple Illinois appellate districts, providing informed insight into complex legal questions affecting individuals and businesses.

James J. Schmidt is licensed to practice in Illinois, Michigan, and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois. He remains active in civic involvement and community initiatives, supporting organizations focused on youth development, education, and mentoring. He brings dedication, professionalism, and steady advocacy to every client he represents.
