About

James C. Olita is a seasoned Illinois attorney who has devoted much of his legal career to family law and domestic relations matters. Since beginning practice in the mid-1980s, he has guided individuals and families through complex disputes involving divorce, parenting issues, and financial support while advocating for practical, client-focused resolutions.

James pursued his legal education in Chicago after completing earlier academic study in 1983 through programs connected with DePaul University, Chicago, IL, and Cambridge University, London, England. He later earned his J.D. from The John Marshall Law School, Chicago, IL, in 1986, preparing for a career in litigation and family law.

James began building his reputation shortly after entering the bar, focusing almost entirely on domestic relations matters. Over the years, he handled a wide range of contested and negotiated cases, developing strong courtroom experience and strategic insight while representing clients facing challenging family transitions and sensitive legal disputes across Illinois courts.

James concentrates his work on family law issues such as divorce, parental responsibilities, parenting time, and child support. His practice also addresses spousal support, property distribution, parentage matters, guardianship concerns, and orders of protection, allowing him to guide families through both financial and parenting-related legal challenges during difficult transitions and disputes.

James has represented a diverse group of clients, including executives of Fortune 500 companies, professional athletes, and members of the Illinois judiciary. His litigation experience includes securing the largest statutory custodial claim award recorded in Illinois and obtaining the first third-party grandparent Parenting Plan after the 2016 family law changes took effect.

James contributes to the legal community through professional organizations and educational efforts related to family law. He participates in the Illinois State Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Association Family Law Committee and has written and lectured on Statutory Custodial Claims throughout Illinois. He was recognized as a Top 100 Lawyer by The National Advocates in 2016.

James C. Olita continues to apply decades of litigation and negotiation experience to help individuals resolve sensitive family disputes. His work emphasizes careful preparation, practical strategy, and informed guidance so clients can address divorce, custody, and support matters while protecting long-term family and financial stability during complex legal transitions and court proceedings.
