James A. Plemmons is a member of Dickinson Wright PLLC, Detroit office, and he is known for his strong leadership skills and deep experience in bankruptcy and commercial matters. For years, James has guided automotive OEMs, suppliers, insurers, lenders, and investor groups through complex supply chain challenges, troubled supplier issues, and bankruptcy proceedings. He brings decades of practical insight to every client he advises and has served as Chair of Dickinson Wright PLLC’s Automotive Industry Team. He is also an active member of the firm’s Management Group, helping to shape its growth and commitment to client service.
James earned his J.D. from American University, Washington College of Law in 1989. He completed his B.A. with honors at Michigan State University in 1986.
Over his career, James has helped businesses and individuals find practical solutions in the face of financial uncertainty. He has represented major automotive companies like FCA US LLC (formerly Chrysler Group LLC), Adient, Yanfeng, Magna International Inc., and Visteon Corporation in high-stakes supplier and bankruptcy matters.
James has counseled more than fifteen suppliers during the General Motors bankruptcy and worked with numerous parties in Lear Corporation’s case. He has advised on major transactions, including representing the Piston Group in acquiring Irvin Automotive from Takata Corporation. His experience also includes counseling secured and unsecured lenders, insurance companies, bankruptcy trustees, debtors, and investor groups in reorganizations, workouts, foreclosures, and liquidations across industries.
In addition to his legal work, James A. Plemmons gives back to the community through leadership and advisory roles. He has served as a board member for the Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club, as the past president of the Trenton Rotary Club, and as an advisory board member to Michigan State University’s Economics Department. With trusted guidance and practical problem-solving, James continues to help people and businesses overcome financial challenges.
