Hunter Cowdrey

Hunter Cowdrey is an Associate Attorney at Nilson Brand Law in Fargo. His practice includes civil litigation, estate planning and probate, and matters involving political subdivisions. Cowdrey also works on commercial and business litigation, contract disputes, and collections. His practice therefore spans both contested matters and planning work, allowing him to assist clients with disputes involving contracts or business relationships as well as probate and estate-related legal needs.

Cowdrey earned a B.A. from the University of North Dakota in 2022, majoring in Political Science with minors in Public Administration and Legal Studies, and graduated magna cum laude. He received his J.D. from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 2025 and was selected to the National Order of Barristers. His education in law, government, and public administration supports work involving litigation, local government matters, and legal issues that require careful analysis of statutes, contracts, and procedure.

Before entering practice, Cowdrey worked as a law clerk with Fargo Public Defenders in 2023 and with the Mountrail County State’s Attorney’s Office in 2024. Those roles provided experience in public-sector legal work from different sides of the justice system. He was admitted in Minnesota and North Dakota in 2026. His current work includes civil disputes, probate and estate planning, and matters for or involving political subdivisions, along with commercial litigation and collections.

Hunter Cowdrey brings recent public-sector clerkship experience and a strong academic record to a developing civil practice. His background in political science, public administration, and legal studies is particularly relevant to matters involving government entities, while his litigation and probate work addresses the needs of businesses and individuals.
