Elizabeth “Betsy” L. White is a distinguished attorney with more than four decades of legal experience, concentrating on criminal defense, civil rights, and appellate law. She has argued complex cases at every judicial level, including the United States Supreme Court. Her legal work defends individual rights and ensures fairness in the justice system.
Elizabeth’s academic journey began at Jacksonville University, where she graduated cum laude with a B.A. in 1977. She then earned her J.D. from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1980. By age 22, she was among the youngest admitted to practice in both Florida and Oregon, marking the start of her impactful legal career.
Elizabeth was the first female private criminal defense lawyer in Jacksonville and has consistently handled serious criminal cases. From federal white collar prosecutions to high-stakes criminal trials, she builds strong defenses from pre-arrest investigations through appeals. Her deep knowledge of both state and federal systems sets her apart.
Elizabeth’s appellate practice includes major victories, such as the Supreme Court decision in Doggett v. United States, which led to the dismissal of a criminal conviction. She also played a key role in Brenner v. Armstrong, helping to block a stay in the U.S. Supreme Court and securing timely legal relief for her clients.
In recognition of her legal excellence, Elizabeth has earned the AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell and is listed in Best Lawyers in America for criminal and appellate law. She is a Super Lawyer and a master in the Chester Bedell Inns of Court. She has also taught legal certification courses and served on the board of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
