David Carrithers is a seasoned intellectual property attorney and Registered Patent Attorney with extensive experience in patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and unfair competition law. Licensed to practice in Kentucky and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, he has successfully represented clients internationally and internationally.

David holds a Juris Doctor from Salmon P. Chase College of Law, a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from Georgetown College. His unique combination of technical and legal expertise enables him to effectively navigate the complexities of intellectual property law, particularly in science, technology, and industrial applications.

Prior to practicing law, David gained invaluable experience as a chemical engineer in industries such as plastics, beverages, and specialty chemicals. He worked on advanced process development, technical services, and research for companies, including B.F. Goodrich, Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, and Rhone-Poulenc.

During his 17+ years as in-house Intellectual Property Counsel at The Valvoline Company, David has led key patent, trademark, and licensing initiatives, helping protect and grow the company’s IP portfolio. He also has extensive experience in intellectual property litigation, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in trade secret misappropriation, patent infringement, trademark infringement, and unfair competition cases.

David’s accomplishments include filing and prosecuting hundreds of patents and trademarks, conducting due diligence for high-profile mergers and acquisitions, and providing legal guidance in cutting-edge technology cases. His clients range from multinational corporations to local businesses, including Ashland Inc., The Valvoline Company, and Kentucky Bourbon Festival, Inc.

As a thought leader, David has contributed to industry publications and professional organizations such as the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the American Chemical Society. His work consistently protects clients’ intellectual assets, fosters innovation, and ensures compliance with complex legal frameworks.
