David Carrithers is a seasoned intellectual property attorney and Registered Patent Attorney with extensive experience in patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and unfair competition law. Licensed to practice in Kentucky and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, he has successfully represented clients internationally and internationally.
David holds a Juris Doctor from Salmon P. Chase College of Law, a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from Georgetown College. His unique combination of technical and legal expertise enables him to effectively navigate the complexities of intellectual property law, particularly in science, technology, and industrial applications.
Prior to practicing law, David gained invaluable experience as a chemical engineer in industries such as plastics, beverages, and specialty chemicals. He worked on advanced process development, technical services, and research for companies, including B.F. Goodrich, Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, and Rhone-Poulenc.
In his legal career, David has served as in-house Intellectual Property Counsel for The Valvoline Company for over 17 years, providing critical support in patent, trademark, and licensing matters. He has also handled intellectual property litigation, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in cases of trade secret misappropriation, patent and trademark infringement, and unfair competition.
David’s accomplishments include filing and prosecuting hundreds of patents and trademarks, conducting due diligence for high-profile mergers and acquisitions, and providing legal guidance in cutting-edge technology cases. His clients range from multinational corporations to local businesses, including Ashland Inc., The Valvoline Company, and Kentucky Bourbon Festival, Inc.
As a thought leader, David has contributed to industry publications and professional organizations such as the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the American Chemical Society.
