Dan Canon is a distinguished civil rights attorney, law professor, and advocate for justice with a career marked by groundbreaking legal work and academic contributions. A graduate of the University of Louisville’s Brandeis School of Law, Mr. Canon has dedicated his practice to advancing individual and constitutional rights and addressing issues of systemic injustice.
As a partner with Saeed & Little, LLP, Mr. Canon focuses on civil rights and business torts, leveraging his extensive legal experience to fight for justice in complex cases. He is best known as lead counsel for the Kentucky plaintiffs in Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized marriage equality across all 50 states.
His commitment to civil rights is further exemplified by his role as plaintiffs’ counsel in Miller v. Davis, a case addressing the denial of marriage licenses in Kentucky, and Nwanguma v. Trump, which tackled the rights of protesters.
Throughout his career, Mr. Canon has represented plaintiffs in high-profile cases involving wrongful convictions, prisoners’ rights, academic freedom, campus sex abuse, and law enforcement overreach. He has argued cases before the 6th, 7th, and 9th Circuit Courts of Appeals and the Kentucky Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. His broad admissions include the United States Supreme Court and multiple district and circuit courts, underscoring his extensive legal reach.
In addition to his litigation work, Mr. Canon teaches civil rights and procedural law at the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law. His scholarly contributions include numerous articles in leading publications and the acclaimed book PLEADING OUT: How Plea Bargaining Creates a Permanent Criminal Class (2022), which examines systemic issues in the criminal justice system.
