D. John Sauer

John Sauer is the Solicitor General of the United States, serving as the federal government’s chief advocate before the Supreme Court. Appointed in 2025, he represents the United States in significant constitutional and statutory cases and oversees appellate litigation strategy nationwide. His role requires close coordination with federal agencies and the Department of Justice, as well as responsibility for shaping the government’s legal positions on issues of national importance.

Sauer earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School after serving as an articles editor of the Harvard Law Review. He previously completed degrees at Duke University and the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, followed by graduate study at the University of Notre Dame. His academic background combines philosophy, theology, engineering, and law, providing a rigorous foundation for appellate advocacy and constitutional analysis nationwide today.

Following law school, Sauer clerked for Judge J. Michael Luttig of the U.S. Court of Appeals and for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. He later served as an assistant United States attorney and practiced appellate litigation in private practice. From 2017 to 2023, he was Solicitor General of Missouri, arguing numerous cases before state and federal appellate courts involving constitutional disputes, statutory interpretation, and separation of powers issues nationwide regularly.
