Charles W. Patrick, Jr. is a nationally recognized litigator who has been instrumental in several of the most impactful public health cases in U.S. history. His groundbreaking work includes over 50 individual asbestos trials and key roles in tobacco litigation that led to multi-billion dollar settlements benefiting public health initiatives across the country.

Charles earned his B.A. magna cum laude from Furman University in 1976, majoring in history. He later obtained his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1979, where he served as executive editor of the law review. His academic achievements laid a strong foundation for a career defined by complex litigation and strategic advocacy.

Charles began his career focusing on asbestos cases at a time when the health dangers of exposure were coming to light. He was part of a legal team that uncovered evidence showing manufacturers knew the risks of asbestos. Through his efforts in over 50 trials and four mass consolidations, thousands of workers suffering from mesothelioma and other diseases received long-overdue justice.

Charles later expanded his focus to tobacco litigation. He was part of the Mississippi team that built the legal theory allowing states to seek reimbursement from tobacco companies for public health costs. His contributions helped secure $240 billion in settlements for more than 40 states, funding smoking prevention programs and healthcare services.

Charles has also supported Canadian provinces in their efforts to recover health spending related to tobacco-related illness.
