Brett earned his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 1974 and his B.A. in French Linguistics from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 1974. He also studied at the University of Rouen, France, where he was awarded 2nd and 3rd degrees of higher education, with honors. He later earned his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1977.
Brett represents businesses in matters involving trademarks, infringement claims, unfair competition, domain name disputes, and advertising issues. His work includes managing large trademark portfolios and handling adversarial proceedings for clients in technology, finance, retail, transportation, and consumer products. He has also handled appeals and litigation matters in both state and federal courts.
Brett has achieved successful outcomes for clients through both litigation and negotiated settlements. In one matter, he helped secure a multimillion-dollar settlement shortly before trial. He also represented a financial services company in a false advertising dispute that resulted in triple damages and attorneys’ fees. Many clients continue to seek his guidance through referrals and long-standing professional relationships.
Brett A. August is also recognized for his involvement in educational and cultural initiatives connected to France and Chicago. He helped establish the French-American Chamber of Commerce in Chicago and later served as its president. Through years of volunteer leadership, he supported educational exchange programs that provided students with opportunities to experience international learning and cultural exchange.
