Benjamin P. Urbelis

Benjamin P. Urbelis is a Boston criminal defense lawyer who represents individuals facing DUI and other criminal charges in Massachusetts. He has tried jury and jury-waived cases in state courts for more than 14 years. His background on both sides of the criminal justice system helps him assess evidence, anticipate prosecution strategies, and build focused defenses for clients confronting the anxiety and uncertainty of a criminal case.

Ben earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Connecticut before receiving his Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School. While attending law school, he worked as a student prosecutor with the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office. He served as lead prosecutor in several cases and gained meaningful trial experience before passing the bar examination. This training gave him a practical foundation in courtroom procedure, case preparation, and legal analysis.

Ben moved into criminal defense after his work with the district attorney’s office. During his first year in private practice, he worked exclusively on drunk driving cases and won every matter he took to trial. His broader prosecution and defense experience spans varied criminal charges, allowing him to understand how the Commonwealth develops cases and where the evidence can be challenged. He has obtained not-guilty verdicts in more than 80 percent of the defense cases he has tried.

Benjamin P. Urbelis has received recognition from the National Trial Lawyers, the National Association of Distinguished Counsel, the American Academy of Trial Attorneys, and Super Lawyers. He is also a member of national and Massachusetts bar and criminal defense organizations. Beyond the courtroom, he speaks with students about the legal profession and criminal justice system and has served as an attorney-coach for a high school mock trial team.
