William Woodford

William Woodford is a founding partner at Avantech Law, LLP and a trial attorney focused on complex intellectual property lawsuits and disputes. His practice centers on patent litigation, licensing, post-grant proceedings, and strategic counseling involving advanced technologies. He has represented clients in district courts nationwide and before appellate courts, including the US Supreme Court. His work spans technologies in the physical sciences, life sciences, electronics, telecommunications, and other innovation-driven industries.

William earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University and a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School. He later completed a Professional Certificate in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His technical education supports his ability to analyze complicated patent claims, scientific concepts, and engineering issues in litigation and licensing matters.

William has more than two decades of experience evaluating infringement claims and developing strategies for patent disputes. Before founding Avantech Law, he spent nearly 20 years at Fish & Richardson P.C., handling intellectual property and technology litigation. His representative matters include a $31.2 million jury verdict involving tire pressure monitoring systems and work on a $235 million patent verdict involving heart failure treatment methods. He has secured patent licenses, handled inter partes reviews, and represented clients in high-stakes appellate proceedings.

William Woodford is admitted in Minnesota and Massachusetts and before several federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court and Federal Circuit.
