About
Tom Bassolino is a patent attorney who focuses on patent preparation and prosecution. He drafts, files, and prosecutes U.S., PCT, national stage, and international patent applications. He works closely with inventors, engineers, and entrepreneurs to review invention disclosures, assess new product developments, and evaluate design-around strategies. His practice supports both individual inventors and Fortune 500 companies across a wide range of industries.
Tom earned a Bachelor of Science, Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, MD. He later received a Juris Doctor, cum laude, Evening Division from New York Law School, New York, NY. During law school, he served as Senior Editor of New York Law School Law Review and was a John Marshall Harlan Scholar affiliated with the Center for Information Law and Policy. He received the Trustees Prize for the highest GPA among evening division students.
Tom has prepared and prosecuted patents in the mechanical and electrical arts, including three-dimensional printing systems, green energy systems, pumps, drilling equipment, razors, stationery products, lighters, computer architecture systems, data networks, software, and business methods. He also has strong experience with medical device patents, such as orthopedic devices, MRI systems, ultrasound scanning systems, flexible stents, drug delivery devices, and cancer treatment technologies.
Tom began his legal career at a boutique patent prosecution firm, where he developed deep experience in patent practice. He previously worked in the New York City office of Jones Day, handling patent prosecution, patent litigation, post-grant matters, portfolio due diligence, and preparing noninfringement, invalidity, patentability, and freedom-to-operate opinions. Before becoming a patent attorney, he worked as a mechanical engineer designing advanced plumbing and fire protection systems.
Tom Bassolino is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted in Maryland, New York, and the District of Columbia. He is also a member of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA), the National Association of Patent Practitioners (NAPP), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
