Tom Barnes, II, focuses his legal practice on helping individuals, farms, and small businesses address financial and legal challenges. His work includes farm, consumer, and small-business bankruptcy, as well as estate planning, probate administration, contracts, and business matters. He also provides legal guidance to municipal governments while serving as City Attorney for Alma, Mayetta, and Harveyville.

Tom completed his early legal foundation through strong academic achievement. Tom earned a B.A. from Fort Hays State University in 1985, graduating Summa Cum Laude. He later received his J.D. from Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kansas, in 1987, preparing him for a legal career focused on practical legal solutions.

Tom was admitted to the bar in 1988 and practices before the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas, as well as the Kansas State District and Appellate Courts. His work regularly involves guiding clients through bankruptcy proceedings, estate planning matters, and commercial legal issues affecting local businesses and individuals.

Tom also served the Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribe as Tribal Prosecutor from 2003 through 2008, where he handled legal matters involving the tribe’s judicial system. This role added valuable courtroom and prosecutorial experience while strengthening his ability to work with diverse legal issues and government entities.

Tom maintains active involvement within the legal community. He is a member of the Topeka Bar Association and the Kansas Bar Association. His professional leadership includes serving as President and director of the Topeka Area Bankruptcy Council and participating on the Bankruptcy Bench/Bar Rules Committee from 2007 through 2010.

Tom has also been recognized for professional excellence within the legal field. He holds an AV® – Preeminent Rated distinction and has been named to the list of Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers® in the area of Bankruptcy: Consumer. These recognitions reflect respect from peers for his experience in bankruptcy and related legal matters.
