Todd earned his J.D., with distinction, from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1987. Before law school, he earned a B.S. from North Dakota State University. His academic work also included service as a student researcher at the University of North Dakota Central Legal Research. He graduated from Fargo North High School in 1979. This training laid a foundation in legal analysis, writing, and problem-solving, which continues to support his work in real estate, probate, corporate, and administrative matters.

Todd has had a long legal career before and after entering private practice. From 1987 to 1989, he served as a judicial law clerk for the North Dakota Supreme Court, where he gained insight into court procedure and legal decision-making. From 1984 to 1985, he worked as a law clerk with Bohlman Law Office in Grand Forks. These roles gave him courtroom and research experience that still benefits clients in complex legal matters today.
