Thomas E. Balhoff is a highly regarded attorney with over 40 years of experience in general civil litigation. A native of Michigan and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Mr. Balhoff holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Louisiana State University and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where he achieved honors in Tau Beta Pi, an honorary engineering fraternity.

Throughout his career, Mr. Balhoff has built a reputation for excellence in civil litigation, with a practice that spans insurance defense, toxic torts, and representation of industrial contractors. In his early career years, he focused on traditional insurance defense and coverage disputes.

Since the mid-1990s, his work has defended industrial contractors operating in construction, maintenance, and heavy equipment services for refineries, petrochemical plants, and oil production facilities. His experience includes defending claims related to toxic chemical exposures such as asbestos, benzene, hydrofluoric acid, and other hazardous substances and advising on indemnity and insurance issues.

Since 2008, Mr. Balhoff has represented the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, Office of Conservation, in oilfield legacy matters. Beginning in 2013, he has served as a hearing officer for cases requiring public hearings under Act 312, further solidifying his expertise in environmental and oilfield litigation.

Recognized as one of the “Best Lawyers in America” for Insurance, Mass Tort, and Class Actions by U.S. News & World Report, Mr. Balhoff has earned an AV Preeminent rating (5.0 out of 5.0) from Martindale-Hubbell, reflecting his professional excellence and peer respect. He is admitted to practice in Louisiana, multiple federal courts, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
