Schultz earned his B.A., cum laude, from Cornell University in 1992, majoring in history and international relations, followed by an M.A. in History from the University of Texas in 1993. He graduated from Cornell Law School cum laude in 1996, where he served as an editor of the Cornell Law Review.

After law school, Schultz clerked for Judge Edward C. Prado of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, gaining valuable exposure to complex federal litigation. He then joined Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld LLP, where he advanced from associate to counsel, working in both litigation and hedge fund groups. In 2008, he brought this extensive experience to private practice in San Antonio, continuing to expand his focus on business and financial disputes.
