Shawn Sukumar

Shawn Sukumar is a Washington, DC criminal defense attorney with Price Benowitz LLP. He has devoted his legal career to criminal defense and represents people charged with offenses in the District of Columbia. His work includes DUI cases, drug possession and distribution allegations, assault, domestic violence, weapons charges, burglary, robbery, prostitution, solicitation, and other criminal matters. He also assists eligible clients with expungement and record-sealing issues after criminal cases have ended.

Shawn earned his J.D. from Emory University School of Law and a bachelor’s degree from The George Washington University, where he graduated with honors. During law school, he clerked with the trial division of the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia and also worked with the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council and the Georgia Capital Defender. His education and defense-focused clerkships provided early exposure to serious criminal cases and trial preparation.

Shawn worked in the Murder Division of the Clark County Public Defender’s Office in Las Vegas after law school. He has practiced for more than ten years in D.C. Superior Court and federal district court and has handled allegations ranging from misdemeanor DUI to felony drug offenses and violent crimes. His earlier public defender experience included cases involving sexual assault, drug charges, and gun offenses. He also serves as a D.C. Bar landlord-tenant pro bono attorney.
