Scott R. Brown

Scott R. Brown is a distinguished attorney specializing in Intellectual Property Litigation at Hovey Williams LLP in Overland Park, Kansas. As the head of the firm’s litigation department, Scott oversees the full spectrum of intellectual property services, including creation, management, enforcement, and licensing, with a primary focus on litigation.

Scott earned his J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1990. Before law school, he completed a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1987.

With 30+ years of legal experience, Scott is a seasoned first-chair trial lawyer who has led more than 100 lawsuits in federal courts across the United States. He serves as lead counsel in high-stakes matters before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), including inter partes reviews (IPRs), post-grant reviews (PGRs), and reexaminations. Scott has also argued multiple cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, handling both appeals and defenses of district court and PTAB decisions.

Scott’s expertise spans various intellectual property disputes, including patent, trademark, trade dress, copyright, unfair competition, trade secret, and patent infringement actions. His practice covers various industries, including digital and computer hardware, digital signal processing, software, agricultural implements, complex mechanical machines, medical devices, and chemical and biotechnology-based technologies.

Beyond litigation, Scott advises clients on infringement, validity, and patentability opinions and copyright, trademark, and trade dress disputes. He also guides IP licensing and related business decisions, helping clients protect and maximize their intellectual property (IP) assets.

Scott is licensed to practice in Kansas, Missouri, and California, along with the U.S. District Courts for Kansas and the Western District of Missouri, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
