Samuel J. Nelson

Samuel J. Nelson is an associate attorney at Frieberg, Nelson & Ask, L.L.P., a South Dakota firm with offices in Canton and Beresford. His practice includes criminal law, personal injury, civil law, lobbying, and municipal law. Nelson earned his J.D. from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 2011 and a B.S. from South Dakota State University in 2008. While in law school, he participated in the USD Law Trial Team and served on the Alternative Dispute Resolution Board from 2009 through 2011. This training strengthened his skills in advocacy, negotiation, dispute resolution, and practical problem solving.

Nelson served as an active-duty military attorney in the United States Marine Corps from 2011 through 2017. His assignments included assistant trial counsel, legal assistance attorney, trial counsel, and defense counsel. That experience provided substantial exposure to prosecution, defense, client counseling, and courtroom practice. He later continued his military service in the Marine Corps Reserve and joined Frieberg, Nelson & Ask in 2017.

Samuel J. Nelson has also served as city attorney for Alcester, South Dakota, bringing his litigation and advisory experience to municipal matters.
