Ryan earned his B.S. in 2002 from the University of South Dakota. He then obtained his J.D. in 2005 from the University of South Dakota School of Law. During law school, he was a Moot Court Board Member in 2004, showcasing his advocacy skills early in his career. In 2009, he further enhanced his trial expertise by graduating from the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College, one of the most prestigious trial advocacy programs in the country.

Ryan’s legal career has been marked by leadership and commitment to justice. In 2009, he was elected to the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Board of Governors, and in 2010, he was named South Dakota Young Lawyer of the Year. As a strong advocate for criminal defense, he founded the South Dakota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 2009 and later served as its president from 2013 to 2017. He also led the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association as president from 2017 to 2018.
