About
Ron Hoevet is a Portland criminal defense lawyer with more than 40 years of experience representing individuals and organizations. His practice covers criminal investigations and prosecutions in Oregon state and federal courts. He has defended clients charged with federal offenses in Washington, Idaho, California, Nevada, Wyoming, and Montana. His work includes white collar criminal defense, general criminal defense, tax crimes, and other serious matters involving significant legal consequences.
Hoevet earned his J.D., cum laude, from Duke University School of Law. He received his B.A. in Economics from Willamette University. His education provided a strong foundation in legal analysis, criminal law, advocacy, and complex financial issues. That academic background supports his ability to address sophisticated criminal cases involving federal statutes, tax matters, financial allegations, and detailed evidentiary records.
Hoevet began his legal career as a trial attorney in the Criminal Section of the Tax Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. He later served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Portland. His federal prosecution experience gave him direct insight into government investigations and trial strategy. He has since spent decades defending clients in state and federal criminal cases, including matters involving tax fraud and other serious federal allegations.
Ron Hoevet has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for more than 35 years. Best Lawyers named him Portland Lawyer of the Year for Criminal Defense: General Practice and Criminal Defense: White Collar in 2025. He received the James M. Burns Federal Practice Award in 2016 for contributions to federal practice in Oregon. He served for three decades on the board of the organization now known as the Northwest Regional Re-Entry Center.
