After receiving his law degree, he was admitted to the Connecticut Bar in 1963, followed by admission to the U.S. District Court, District of Connecticut that same year. His qualifications expanded with admission to the U.S. Court of Appeals, Second Circuit in 1965, and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit in 1992.
