Robert J. Alessi is a nationally and globally recognized attorney and serves as Global Vice Chair of the Energy Sector at DLA Piper. With decades of experience, Robert represents Fortune 100 clients in their most critical legal challenges, including criminal defense, enforcement actions, regulatory compliance, high-stakes litigation, and complex transactions. Known for his strategic thinking, rigorous advocacy, and exceptional client service, he is often chosen to lead major matters involving energy, environmental, and financial services issues.
Robert earned his J.D., cum laude, from Albany Law School and holds a B.S. from Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
Robert has built a multifaceted civil and criminal practice spanning state, federal, and appellate courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court and the Second and D.C. Circuit Courts of Appeals. He has litigated claims involving commercial fraud, constitutional rights (Section 1983), and RICO violations, among others. His courtroom skill, particularly with expert testimony, is rooted in his scientific background and is a key element in his litigation success.
One of Robert’s most distinguished roles was representing the public entity responsible for the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site after 9/11—a high-profile matter awarded to him via national competition. He has also served as a municipal attorney and taught at both Albany Law School and the New York State Judicial Institute.
