About
Richard Monahan is an attorney at Bordas & Bordas in Wheeling who has represented West Virginia citizens and consumers for more than 28 years. Known as Rick, he focuses on Truck Accidents, Motor Vehicle Accidents, and Insurance Bad Faith. His career has included significant plaintiff-side civil litigation, trial work, class actions, and appeals involving serious injuries, consumer rights, insurance conduct, and other disputes where individuals face large organizations or insurers.
Rick earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1990 after graduating from Juniata College in 1987. He then served a three-year federal clerkship with the Honorable Elizabeth V. Hallanan, a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of West Virginia. That experience gave him an early view of federal litigation and judicial decision-making before he began building a long practice representing plaintiffs in civil cases.
His representative results include a $3.9 million verdict in a wrongful death motor vehicle case and a $2.5 million verdict in a retaliatory discharge matter. Rick has also worked on class actions involving natural gas rights, defective drugs, and consumer claims. His appellate experience includes numerous matters before the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia and work in Smith v. Bayer Corp., where the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously for West Virginia class-action plaintiffs.
Richard Monahan has received an AV rating and recognition from litigation organizations during his career. His practice combines trial preparation, appellate work, and experience challenging insurance practices on behalf of injured people and consumers. He brings a perspective shaped by federal judicial service and decades of plaintiff-side litigation, helping clients develop evidence, address disputed liability, and pursue claims arising from vehicle crashes, insurance disputes, and other serious civil matters.
