About

Richard Lawson is the managing partner at Lawson & Berry in Atlanta, Georgia, where he focuses on DUI defense and related criminal matters. He represents drivers and other individuals facing DUI charges, traffic offenses, license consequences, and criminal allegations throughout Metro Atlanta and North Georgia. Lawson draws on more than 30 years of practice and prior prosecutorial experience to evaluate cases, challenge evidence, negotiate resolutions, and prepare matters for trial.

Lawson earned his law degree from Emory University School of Law, where he was an award-winning mock trial student attorney. After law school, he was selected to serve as an Assistant District Attorney and prosecuted DUI cases for the State of Georgia. His legal education, courtroom training, and early prosecution experience provided a strong foundation for understanding DUI investigations, trial strategy, evidentiary issues, and the procedures used by law enforcement and prosecutors.

Lawson has handled more than 5,000 cases and has served as lead counsel in hundreds of Georgia DUI jury trials and motions. His experience includes felony DUI prosecutions, repeat-offender and habitual violator cases, serious accident and injury-by-vehicle matters, hit and run charges, drug-related DUI cases, child endangerment, boating under the influence, probation violations, and vehicular homicide. He also represents clients in Georgia Department of Driver Services license suspension hearings.

Richard Lawson also contributes to DUI defense education through teaching, speaking, and writing. He serves as an instructor for the Institute for Continuing Legal Education and has presented on cross-examination, DUI investigations, ethics, and related defense strategies. Lawson has completed extensive field sobriety evaluation and DUI detection coursework and has been certified as a standardized field sobriety testing instructor since 2000. His practice combines courtroom experience, technical DUI training, and practical client guidance.
