Mr. Best earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Economics from New Mexico State University in 1978 and later completed a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics from the same university in 1982. He continued his legal education at Texas Tech University School of Law, earning his J.D. in 1985. This academic background provided strong training in economics, agriculture, and law. It also prepared him to advise clients on property and agricultural business issues, estate planning, and complex financial decisions, and to handle daily matters effectively.
Mr. Best established his firm in 1990 and, after beginning his legal career, built a practice focused on estate planning, probate administration, and business law. He previously served as General Counsel to New Mexico Governor Garrey Carruthers, gaining valuable government and policy experience. In private practice, he advises clients on business entities, real estate matters, agricultural law, and renewable energy projects. His work helps clients structure businesses, manage property interests, and develop plans that reduce legal risk and support growth.
R. Max Best is admitted to practice in the State Bars of New Mexico and Texas and has held leadership roles within the New Mexico legal community. He has served as a director and chair of sections focused on real estate, probate, trust, and business law. He also contributed to the steering committee that drafted the New Mexico Limited Liability Company Act. Through legal guidance, planning strategies, and educational presentations, he helps clients understand complex laws and make confident decisions daily.
